Tyranny for Columbians
My Congressman, Rep. Mark Pocan, favors statehood for the District of Columbia. A recent letter to the Wisconsin State Journal challenged that position, wondering how it would benefit the State of Wisconsin or the 2nd Congressional District.
The 2020 Census reported DC’s population at 689,545 (more than Wyoming or Vermont). These human beings, our fellow Americans, pay federal taxes. Yet, since DC isn’t a state, they have no voice in Congress as to what those taxes should be or how they should be spent.
The patriots who founded America started out at the Boston Tea Party and subsequently threw off the yoke of British royal rule under the rallying cry “Taxation without representation is tyranny!”.
How interesting that Mr. What’s In It For Me comes down — in public, out loud — so squarely on the side of tyranny. Could it have something to do with a majority of America's last colony being people of color?

The Wisconsin State Journal published my letter today, and you might be amused to see how much they watered it down:
A recent letter to the editor "Statehood for DC won't aid Wisconsin" challenged U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Black Earth, for his support of making Washington, D.C., the 51st state. The letter questioned how District of Columbia statehood would benefit Wisconsin or the 2nd Congressional District.
The 2020 Census reported D.C.'s population at 689,545 (more than Wyoming and Vermont). These human beings, our fellow Americans, pay federal taxes. Yet because D.C. isn't a state, it has no voice in Congress on how taxes should be spent.

Denying people in D.C. representation is tyranny.
